Charlotte Museum of History to Open Landmark American Revolution Exhibition April 14

The Charlotte Museum of History will debut its most ambitious exhibition to date, “American Revolution: The Augmented Exhibition,” opening to the public on Tuesday, April 14. This groundbreaking national exhibition uses video game technology to immerse visitors in the defining moments that shaped the nation and its ideals of freedom and liberty.

Making its East Coast debut in Charlotte, the exhibition will be on view at the museum until April 2027, and is the only opportunity for audiences in the Carolinas to experience it. Tickets are available at charlottemuseum.org/america250.

Developed by Histovery in partnership with the Museum of the American Revolution, the exhibition is part of a nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence. It travels to other U.S. cities through 2031 with a goal of reaching all 50 states.

Created in collaboration with leading historians and scholars, the exhibition blends the best in physical display and augmented reality to create a fully immersive historical experience that is engaging and easy to use for all ages.

Using Histovery’s patented HistoPad tablet, visitors will journey through the years 1763–1789 via immersive 3D re-creations. Along the way, they can explore pivotal events such as the Boston Tea Party, the Constitutional Convention, and the Battle of Yorktown; step into historic cities including Boston, Philadelphia, and New York; and encounter the diverse individuals who shaped America’s founding.

“Hosting American Revolution: The Augmented Exhibition is a defining moment for our museum,” said Terri L. White, president and CEO of the Charlotte Museum of History. “Our historic site offers a powerful connection to this era through the 1774 Alexander Rock House and its original owner, Hezekiah Alexander, a Revolutionary statesman and framer of North Carolina’s first Constitution and Bill of Rights. We are excited to welcome visitors for this one-of-a-kind experience and to inspire deeper reflection on our nation’s founding ideals of freedom and liberty.”

The exhibition’s arrival follows a significant milestone for the museum. In 2025, the State of North Carolina designated the 1774 Rock House as a site of statewide historic significance, an honor held by only a select number of properties across the state, recognizing its importance as a cultural, architectural and historical landmark.

In addition to the national stories in the exhibition, the museum is dedicating a full gallery to telling the story of the Carolinas during the American Revolution. The Revolution in the Carolinas exhibition includes local scenes such as Captain Jack’s ride from Charlotte to Philadelphia, pivotal American victories at King’s Mountain and Cowpens and the local resistance to the British occupation at the Battle of Charlotte. The Carolinas exhibition is presented by the John William Pope Foundation. Major supporters of the exhibition include the John William Pope Foundation, Mecklenburg County, Foundation for the Carolinas and the City of Charlotte.
