A Silk Road-Inspired Penthouse in Tribeca

Step into an extraordinary penthouse that captures the soul of New York with a stunning blend of artistry, Silk Road-inspired luxury, and modern sensibility. Designed by the emerging talents of Hines Collective, this 6,000-square-foot, 25-room duplex soars over Tribeca, unveiling panoramic views of the cityscape and rivers through grand windows on three sides. The penthouse’s design is a curated tapestry of vintage and modern elegance, featuring bespoke pieces by design icons like Hervé Van Der Straeten, Achille Salvagni, and Pierre Paulin. Sculptural surprises await around every cor-ner—there’s a bronze tree in the primary closet, a custom bird sculpture spanning the living room wall, and a moody media room that channels the essence of a classic speak-easy. The transformation was achieved in an ambitious nine-month renovation led by Hines Collective, founded in 2021 by Devin Hines, alongside his creative team.

It is a celebration of unique, high-end materials and artistry. Though the fireplace, kitchen, and foyer—originally crafted by designer Monique Gibson and architects Ike Kligerman Barkley—remained intact, Hines Collective reimagined nearly every other space. Luxurious textures, from eglomise glass panels and leather-clad millwork to custom fabrics, make each room distinct. The design team incorporated outdoor performance fabrics for upholstery to accommodate the client’s energetic 70-pound puppy without compromising on style. The enlarged primary closet was planned as a combination of three rooms. During demolition, a surprise building riser was uncovered running directly through the center of the newly combined space. It could not be moved, and due to the tight schedule, Hines Collective had about a week to pivot and completely change the design. They offered several conventional options to conceal within cabinetry and one curveball option, to encapsulate the riser within a large, bronze sculptural tree.

"Fortunately for us, our client’s “adventurous spirit prevailed,” remembers Devin Hines. “The project was completed on schedule.”

The media room stands out with oxblood walls, a hammered gold bar, and dramatic lighting, creating a truly immersive ambiance. The homeowner’s love for birds is gracefully reflected in custom decor, from the dining table’s intricate detailing to light fixtures that add an organic charm to each space. This theme is carried through the entire apartment, including a powder room where eglomise panels display a dragon—a mean-ingful symbol selected by the homeowner. Each room’s furnishings are as thoughtfully selected as the architecture. The living room, for example, features a “Contour” coffee table by DeMuro Das and a custom double-sided settee upholstered in Kravet fabric. The media room’s sectional, upholstered in performance fabric by Holly Hunt, is a cozy yet sophisticated anchor for evenings of entertainment.
